How Can pain And Tingling In The Wrist Be Treated?

I have pain in my wrist since having an IV for a surgery. Is this normal? Is this something that will go away? It s a sharp, tingling, radiating pain that is just sort of there and a sharp pain when I pick up something, turn it a certain way, etc., it doesn t hurt to touch, and it radiates up my arm and to my fingers. Is there a possibility of nerve damage from the IV?

Hello,

Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.

From what you have written, it is likely that a nerve was injured during insertion of your IV line. This can happen as the artery and nerves are in close proximity near the wrist, though this is very rare.

The nerve fibres that have been damaged will join together to heal. This will take time – anywhere between a few weeks to up to 6 months. Gradually you should see that your symptoms are improving.

If your symptoms are causing you distress, you can take Pregabalin 75 mg twice a day, if the symptoms are not subsiding increase the dose every week to up to maximum 300 mg twice aday. Alternatively you could take Gabapentin 100 mg - start with once a day and you can increase the dose after 3-4 days to 100 mg three times a day if symptoms are still persisting, you can go up to 600 mg three times/day. As these are prescriptions only medications, you need to see your doctor for these.

If you notice that your symptoms are becoming worse, or you start noticing weakness of your hand muscles, then you should see your doctor sooner.

I hope this answer has been helpful to you.
